There is quite a bit that can go into holding a successful 1-on-1 weekly/bi-weekly with each member of your team. This can be especially difficult without having access to data in a single view. Since Pathlight frees up the amount of time it takes for managers to obtain access to data, we want to take some time to focus on helping you understand all that our 1-on-1s encompass.
Let's discuss the main portion of this view, the 1-on-1 itself, then we can discuss what lives on the left and right side of your 1-on-1. You'll find that each 1-on-1 follows an agenda outlined by topics, metrics, and pulses. You can create templates for your meetings to have recurring metrics and pulses.
Within the 1-on-1 agenda, there are a few things living there that make communications with your frontline seamless. Topics are one of those items that will be available in each agenda. These are items for discussion that may not necessarily require a regular conversation. Typically these are used for one-off conversations, maybe an update to a policy or a sync-up on a new project. Either way, topics can be used to drive important chats with your employees. Additionally, what’s great about each section of the 1-on-1 is that comments can be made, so if something isn’t entirely clear or needs further discussion, employees can leave a comment to dive into the conversation even deeper. As you work through each topic, you can mark it as complete, and you’ll see that it goes gray and does not follow you into the next 1-on-1 agenda. However, if you ever need to revisit that conversation, you can look through your meeting history to see that you covered that topic in your 1-on-1.
These metrics allow you to see a snapshot of your employee’s performance (the snapshot will lock in the results for those metrics by the end of the calendar day). It’s important to funnel a few metrics into your 1-on-1 agenda when meeting with the frontline to ensure understanding around priority metrics and areas where your employee is not only excelling but also areas where there is an opportunity for growth. Having these documented in your 1-on-1 also gives a record of what was coached on, should performance become a concern. Again, this section allows for commenting and engagement around the metric details, so you can utilize the comments to encourage the actions that will drive stellar performance.
Pulses are conversation pieces you want to sync up with your frontline about regularly. It may be anything from “How can I best support you this week?” to “What are some of the challenges you faced over the last 7 days?” Finding ways to connect with your frontline should be top of mind during these 1-on-1 conversations. Too often, we find ourselves looking for status updates, but, with employees driving the conversation, we can look for things beyond performance to help us understand what motivates and influences employee actions in the workplace.
Within the 1-on-1, you also have a few other capabilities. You will find that within a 1-on-1, you can look at historical 1-on-1s by clicking on the Previous meeting. You can also add a new meeting, edit the meeting time, or delete the meeting by clicking the three dots next to the meeting date/time. If you need to edit the current meeting details, click the menu icon located in the upper right corner of the 1-on-1.
In addition to the main section of the 1-on-1 view, you also have the ability to create a + New 1-on-1, search for 1-on-1s by person or subject, as well as view upcoming 1-on-1s and meetings that will be occurring in the current week or later on the left side of your view.
On the right side of the 1-on-1, you will find recent messages between you and the person (people) included in the 1-on-1, along with the functionality to review outstanding tasks or create new ones.
It should be noted that if you have not yet integrated your Google calendar with Pathlight, you will have to manually create a meeting cadence with each team member, or create meetings ad-hoc.
